They were at AllGood almost every year, I listened to them play several times. Stayed for the whole thing more than once. It was pretty awful.
I'm kind of stunned there are people that like them. But, also, I think a lot of people grew up in really traumatic environments with terribly dysfunctional families, and it's great that they've managed to break that cycle, so I'm really glad that they've found something to enjoy.
They're just not for me.
This made me LOL.

Need to know the moe.
But nothing makes me say 'no, I'd rather not."
I consider myself to have a very open musical taste. I like it all, even terrible 90's country music (Patty Loveless), Britney Spears (Til The World Ends is my JAM), Kanye West (Through the Wire is genius), or a crackling recording of Nat King Cole or Glenn Miller and his band. Y'all have already heard me praise my punk rock roots. 90% of that music is garbage, but it makes my heart happy.
I will also GO see all kinds of live music, budget and schedule allowing. I go to our shitty county fair and see every awful headliner (except for the country performers bc the local fan base are racist sexist scum and no one should subject themselves to that torture), battle of the bands, street fair etc. I will especially go to shows that my friends are going to bc maybe I will end up liking them in the end (as happened with Phish, Twiddle, Keller, etc...).
But I will never, ever, EVER like Moe or see them on purpose. They make my ears bleed.

I figure, every act was somebody's favourite.
With age I have mellowed and realized that my opinions, are just my opinions, nothing more.
I think of music the same way as I now judge wine/beer etc - if you like it, it's good, enjoy it.

Whether or not you like moe. may have to do with your upbringing. Still waiting for clarification.

I have never understood the moe. dislike, but it goes back. Back when they were at the peak of their powers in the early 2000s, I think they brought in a number of fans from circles like O.A.R, Dispatch, and Guster into the fringes of the jam scene. Always thought that was an issue to some and somehow seen as a bad sign, and maybe is reflective of their music having a slightly more poppy character to some of it (Captain America and such). I've never been over the moon for them, but have always respected their musicianship and do think they are a very good live band. They have evolved over time, but I don't think they went too far aflung from their genre and it is captive of what was happening in the Northeast when they were building up. Went to moe.down prior to L'14 (consecutive weekends)...where the joke is "what time is moe. playing?" because they are always playing. Had been to the festival before, but really took note in 2014 that being totally immersed made me respect them more and not less after hearing them play a wide spectrum of music and playing the same song in a number of different ways. If you haven't seen them live, hope you give their Lockn' set a try. They can take improvisational jams to some fun places. I have listened to the audio, but would be interested in hearing someone that saw their Dark Side set at Peach in 2016 as well?
Had a fair amount of sampling of the early Avetts. I thought the Avetts made pretty good music and were great to see live when they got off the ground. Saw them at places like the Carrboro Arts Center etc. Enjoyed them okay back then, and haven't seen them live for a while, but the desire to get mainstream is clear and the new music is...not good imho. A friend who saw them at Mountain Jam in 2014 did not have glowing reviews. Listened to three shows over the weekend from 2016 to get a sense of what they are doing....three totally different shows musically (Nashville, a Folk Festival, and a Amphitheater). I bet they bring a higher energy show.
Love, love, love the Lockn' lineup this year, and will approach the Avetts with an open mind even though they don't have me excited for their set. The rest of the festival is so stacked to me, I'll survive and hope they surprise.

Oh I agree, wasn't joking on them for that as much as just laughing at the fact that I went to a Rusted Root show (to see moe). And blueindian's post about them made me think of it.

I think Moe. and UM are similar bands in that they are very talented musicians. Somehow, to me, UM pushes it too much although they were good last year. They're just too much of...something, can't put my finger on it.
With that said, I like Moe.!! (and Larry and Curly and Shemp)

I feel the same way, it's a certain way they play stylistically. Nick is over the moon about them and I just can't get on board unless it's one of their good mashups or they get really heavy... It's not that either Meh or UM are bad musicians or unworthy of having fans, I just have no skin in their game. They do nothing for me. Except UM I can watch because they ham it up some times and Meh just drives me batty.

Indeed, a variety of strong opinions often indicates there is something to them.
But I can do without anyone playing prog rock, especially ones too young to know its genesis, so if UM does that, it's two strikes and hit the showers. Don't want to see any laptop rock either and that goes for the Williams kid.
