I love the late nights.  More casual, more intimate.  Very fun year 2, and my very favorite set year 3 was Umphrey's late night set.  Also one of the best sets I've ever seen Umphrey's do - they really shined in that venue like I don't think they would have on the main stage.  JRAD's late night sets last year definitely did not disappoint.

That Umphrey's set was awesome, also late night stage allows for some longer sets which is why JRAD should play there at least once again.

well that's consistent with a band that takes a break from touring but is not breaking up. You can expect the same from Dave Mathews Band. They have the luxury of picking the events they want to play, a very different drill than multi location shows night after night.

In fact the business model of the festivals is to have the crowd travel, not the bands, as they have done in Europe before our scene exploded. The early promoters of the big fests like Bonnaroo had watched the European model.   Now the new thing is the vacation destination festivals/shows.

I say "new" and that's not to say there haven't been music festivals for years, but not at the commercial level, size and frequency we have now.

Bah!  Back in the day the band traveled and we just went along!

Judging from the email today, it looks like Lockn' is promoting Phil Lesh and The Avett Brothers at the top of the bill.

"The fifth anniversary of the festival will take place August 24-27, 2017 in Arrington, VA, and will feature Phil Lesh & Friends, The Avett Brothers, Widespread Panic, The String Cheese Incident, Umphrey's McGee, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Gov't Mule, and many more."

As much as I admire Phil, just can't get real excited about seeing his band perform. It will be interesting to see who he has with him, especially for the Terrapin Station set - could be fun. Last year was the first time I've seen anyone do "Terrapin Flyer" live, it will be tough to top.

Oh, and everyone, please, please, please DO NOT let Phil sing I Know You Rider again! Please!

I am pretty sure from the puzzle piece yesterday that the Terrapin Family Band will be with him for the Terrapin Station tribute set.  

I've never seen the complete Terrapin Family band, although I've seen many of the players.  I do really like Ross James.

I've seen the Terrapin Family Band a few times and as I said earlier it was fun at the time but the play back left much to be desired. I too liked Ross James, I just don't view him as main stage Lockn material. And yes, Phil will be singing at least part of Terrapin.

So we are hoping for SCI & Panic to both get a sit in set and one regular set right? Maybe give UM, Moe., Mule and JRAD two sets each.

Add in a couple headliners, a bit of funk/soul here (MMW, Word, George Porter, etc.), a bit of early afternoon bluegrass there and in addition to the rockn to lockn winners it should be filled up at that point.

when it comes to promotion it's not about who's good but who has the name recognition. Those who follow music will drill down to the lower tiers; those who don't--but who buy a lot of tickets--are drawn by the names.

So in the order of that advertisement I'd say they have them in "popular name recognition order" with the exception of JRAD but maybe they have a lot now, certainly on the circuit. Plus the billing order is part of the contract process.

Phish is my favorite band, but MMJ were the best band at the fest by a pretty wide margin. Definitely a more proper headlining band than anything on this year's lineup thus far.

Vulfpeck getting 2 slots was a travesty. JRAD has two slots this year. I hope they don't give 2 slots to anybody who can't fill them with different songs.

George Clinton Incident sounds pretty amazing to me...

Tom Petty was great. I wouldn't complain if he was there again, but I've kind of seen it.

So, still not excited <personally> to make the long trip down there. Waiting on spring announcements and other things in my personal (and work) life to come to fruition to hopefully get us to Lockn' again. Right now I'm at 50%.


I'm totally down for Brandi, Keller, WSP.

Sidenote, we're planning on also doing Summer Camp and Blue Ox also this summer, but they're more local for us so we could just take a long weekend instead of a whole week to get to VA and back.

Ya I've seen him twice, and will already be seeing him at Jazz Fest (at least that is the way it looks) won't complain if he gets signed but would be thrilled if they spent that money on say... Stevie Wonder

I'm with you but we may be in the minority. I have zero interest in a late night show especially while camping in August.  I'm glad when bands I don't want to see play them, and resent it when good bands like JRAD play late, because I won't see them.  To me, it disrespects a band's value to put them late, but that perspective admittedly is based on my value of late shows.

You can't hoot with the owls and soar with the eagles.

 It's far cooler at 0100 in August than at 1500 ever or 2100 even. Late nite shows are 2.5 hours-ish. You can bring your own beverages, etc. etc. I do agree with you that it's kind of a dis to a band to be relegated to a late set, off the main stage, but I'm glad those bands don't seem to see it as such. If I were a  musician I'd much rather perform in 75°-80° than 90°-100°+. Good thing it's not up to me, because nothing would start until dusk. That big yellow, hot disk thing can go fork it's self.
