IMO this is not so much a race issue and making it one distracts from the real issue--the storm-trooper tactics of police (not even police--ABC agents!) for minor and non-violent infractions.

But this is what our promoters have to work with and keep pacified!

There is no doubt in my mind that it is partially a race issue, as the overreacting happens much more frequently with people of color. Although the woman arrested for buying water was white, I believe.

I have always been confused as to why we have state run liqour stores and abc agents acting like storm troopers.

Meanwhile va is probably one of the easiest states to find moonshine. From out here in the mountains to the coast.

I dont normally drink liqour but think you should be able to buy bottles from a private buisness. Not having to rely on the state.

The answer to your question is in the question. We (Virginia) have so much moonshine b/c we have so many ABC rules + high prices. The strategy in controlling the price was to make legal liquor cheap enough to put illegal out of business (coupled with the enforcement threat) yet not so cheap that people would drink too much.

Lots of 'shine and other violations* is a sign that it's out of balance.

*real violations, not the bogus bully tactics that are too prevalent now

This video and the mindset it represents is why I believe VA will be one of the last states in the nation to legalize cannabis.  Parochial, over regulating, etc.  It's a pattern.

Well, that and the lack of direct access to the ballot.  Polls show a majority of Virginians favor legalization, but the legislature is another question.

The direct access is an entire East Coast problem. Few, if any, Eastern states have voter initiatives. There can be referenda, but the bill still has to be submitted by a member of the legislature. The reason the Western states have been on the forefront of legalization is if you get enough signatures on any question, it goes on the ballot. I'm not a big states-rights guy, but that does seem more "the will of the people."

I would think PA would be slow to adopt legalization too, what with the nutty alcohol laws (we can't even get a very restrictive medical bill out of committee), but I never would have guessed we'd legalize same-sex marriage before it happened nation-wide.*

there are many successful, financially stable gay people in the community who are partnered, have kids, work good jobs, etc. its not exactly the same as the people who rip water pipes, and i know many well respected hard workers rip water pipes and some are gay, but i'm not surprised at all.  i know money walks but sometimes goodness reigns.  apparently a federal law might be passed to legalize mj by state.  thats a better umbrella to stand under, because it seems the majority has spoken.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Did I not make clear that while I do give a shit about whether or not gays can marry, mentioning it was only to prove a point about the Commonwealth legislative process (besides, same-sex marriage in PA came about as a result of an administrative end-run)? Shoulda known better than to have brought it up.

ok, but you swore at me and this is freedom of speech. yes a swear word is free to speak in an aggressive manner. i don't care what you think, but as an argument, what goes to get passed in legislature has a certain machine behind it, regardless of the people's votes. so if you say you are surprised it passed in va, what is your reasoning? i understand the idea of the people voting, it is an issue in most places. i guess your post is inconsequential to my life and whatever your strong feelings are on a level enough to swear is not my prob. god bless.

ok, maybe i do need reading lessons because it looks to me va passed same sex marriage before it happened nationwide. obviously it makes no sense for me to argue.  i guess when you declare a desire to not argue about something, you are puffing your chest out for me to not speak my mind, and i immediately want to, though i mentioned nothing about the merits or problems of same sex marriage.  who freaking cares?

I never would have guessed that Pennsylvania (NOT Virginia) would legalize same-sex marriage before it happened nationwide, because, with the exception of Philly and Pittsburgh, it's a very rural, conservative, hyper-religious state. I, personally, am not any of those things except rural. If things hadn't gone down the way they did, with a rogue administrator and a beleaguered, unpopular governor, I'd be willing to bet that it would've stayed illegal until the SCOTUS decision.


I hate to go on the record with anything political or sociological on here, but I catered a wedding for two lovely ladies who were the first same-sex couple to get married in Sue's hometown. For free. As a wedding present. Sheesh, people on here keep wanting to pick fights where there aren't any.

back to the ABC at Lockn: so let's all hope the rain keeps whatever ABC agents are there, in their trailers, and not out looking for minor violations.
Their strategy in the past is to hold the festival promoters responsible for any act of any of the 20,000 people, as if they were an ABC manager in a one-room bar. And to show ABC their best efforts of compliance, they have to be strict at the places they actually control. So don't be hating on management if they ask us to obey the rules they are bound to.
