yes, very clever....  Regarding the article, I like this part the best:

Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors (preferably within two hours) to wash off and more easily find ticks that are crawling on you.

A tick needs to be attached for 24 hours before Lyme is transmitted, so it's probably worth ponying up the money to shower every day.

BUT: img.medscape.com/news/2012/lyme_disease_map.jpg This part of VA isn't considered high-risk for Lyme-ridden blacklegged ticks.

I will spray some Pyrethrins on my clothes, in a well-ventilated area, just to be safe.

I am in Lynchburg Ticks are pretty nasty here(lots of cases of lymes), they calm down this time of year. Tea Tree oil is a great natural repellent.

something with DEET works well to repel.  like deep woods off.  that stuff is likw %40 DEET  I would hit your shoes and pants.   I don't spray directly on skin.  kinda burns in warm weather.

I work on a farm in southwest VA and we dip our working dogs and the other farm pets in a permethrin bath. I always throw my clothes in the tub too (not the ones I'm wearing at the time, I imagine farm work is no bueno when you're naked). You can also buy the stuff to spray on your clothes/gear. I'm usually all for local, natural, non-gmo, hippy-dippy shit, but when it comes to nasty disease carrying insects I'm ready for war. Especially since I heard about this tick with a bite that can make you allergic to meat. Fantastic list...unless you're flying in from Oregon. The thought of buying stuff there and then leaving it behind or shipping gear makes those tent rentals look that much more appealing!

It's really weird these days. I can't imagine just ditching camping gear but it is a real trend. The last B'roo my wife went to was 2 years ago (2006 for me) and she was amazed at the number of people that flew in, rented a car, drove to Walmart and bought the cheapest tent, chair and cooler they could and then just walked away. Even people that drove there seemed to do the same thing. Just abandon their camp instead of packing it up. Of the 3 tents we have I don't think we bought any of them. 1 we found brand new at a fest and the other 2 are used but still highly functional that we rescued from fests. Crazy.

I wish our Subie had room for all the stuff we've seen left behind. My buddy found an EZ-up in a dumpster after Hickory Fest that just needed a little repair. He found the parts he needed on another discarded EZ-up...in the same dumpster.

That's an awful trend. I would like to think people are more environmentally responsible at these fests. Don't even get me started on shopping at Walmart! We flew to Wanee 2 years ago. We shipped some gear ahead and since we needed some new gear anyhow, we bought it on a website that shipped anywhere for free...so it was at our friend's house when we arrived. It didn't cost much to ship it back to Oregon.  However, this year, we are looking at those tent rentals w/ cots for GA ticket holders. That would cut down the gear by half...

OK, this is optional but pretty cool: AA battery-powered Xmas lights for your EZ-up. At night at a fest that doesn't allow fires, they provide just the right amount of ambient light for those who, shall we say, have pupils more dilated than usual.

But again, not in this part of VA. Currently confined to NY which is a hotbed of Lyme disease. But scary creepy news all the same.

I had Lyme disease back in '89 when it first gained notoriety. I was living in NY and getting ready to move to Florida at the time that I "pulled" the tick off the back of my leg. Not good to pull them off but hey, I was not aware of this at the time.
Lyme Disease is no joke. By the time I got to Fl, the back of my leg was inflammed and oozing. It felt and looked like a 45 cal. bullet wound. It had progressed to all of my joints hurting, and I ached all over.
The ER in Florida put me on IV's for a week and it finally went away.
Every time I get back from being  out in the woods or camping at festivals, I keep a close lookout for the little bastiches!




Soon I will be posting a tutorial (Video & pics) on how I will be taking a free shower everyday at Lockn
with just a few low cost items from Wally world and sLowes's so that you too can take a free shower.
