Love the Wilco add. Not sure how 2 nights is going to work out but it could mean a straight set and a collaboration set. And now Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy are on campus and able to sit in with who knows who.

Yeah, I'll be staying in camp for Wilco because I sure wouldn't want to get any of that on me.

-Bobby Weir opened a few Wilco shows last summer and collaborated with them on a few occasions. Notably, Wilco's California Stars -> Dark Star
-Wilco's guitarist Nels Cline is a beast and will blow your mind
-Nels has a new record out with Medeski Martin and Wood. I'm hoping that since The Wood Brothers are now on the bill that a MMW/Nels Cline show could be possible at Lockn.
-You sound silly when you call Wilco music hipster. They've been making great music since the late 90s and are not afraid to jam the fuck out.
I was definitely surprised they got two slots but they have the repertoire to make it interesting. Also Jeff Tweedy's stage banter is usually hilarious.

If you don't know them or only listened to a few cursory tunes on Spotify and then rejected them as pop, I say you will be shocked at the level of musicianship. Nels Cline alone is a compelling character, a 57 year old improvisational genius who puts so much physical energy into his playing he has to get iced down after every show. When not playing with the band he frequently performs in situations where every note is improvised.
Tweedy inserts that talent with a versatile group that knows how to entertain. Their signature piece remains Impossible Germany, where Cline riffs with abandon and then like a horn player he regains the melody just long enough to go on another tangent. To dismiss this band as pop is beyond misinformed. They embrace a lot of pop conventions perhaps but they do it by inserting those influences into complex tunes that are full of hooks.
Reading all the hassles regarding getting in and out of the festival and the Gestapo searches you have to endure has given me pause. Wilco runs a festival every few years in an art museum in Massachusetts that is one of the coolest events I've ever attended. No search, no traffic, thousands of people and the coolest vibe I've ever experienced in a mass gathering. Jeff is no hipster and the people who attend their shows seem like normal people to me. I've been going to dead shows since Pigpen. I say put on your tie dye, look in the mirror, and tell me who the true hipster is. Don't know Umphry McGees music but I go in with an open mind and heart and look forwards to being entertained.

It should go without saying that everyone's entitled to their opinion, whether they be CriticalBill or baritoneboy, but this thread has been concerning me for some time. While I don't necessarily agree with Bill's assessment, some of the subsequent responses have bordered on ad hominem attacks. While I realize they don't like to have too many rules, I appeal to the forum gods mods for one against name-calling. Attack your opponent's reasoning, not your opponent. To do otherwise is not only a rhetorical fallacy, but being a poor sport.

Wilco resonates with me on so many levels but let me make one thing clear. I wasn't calling anyone names. I don't get the "hipster" label because this band has been anything but hip. They thumbed their nose at the record industry and make their money by touring. They support other artists and put on a great, professional show and no two shows are alike. Three years ago at their Solid Sound Festival they played about three hours the second night and only a couple of songs that were repeated. Last year they took requests from their fans and played an entire night of cover songs. It was a unique and special experience with a lot of surprises.
I also think Bob Weir is God and Ace is my favorite Grateful Dead album. It was also probably the "poppiest" record the Dead ever recorded. Guess I've always been a fan of really good songwriting and I love a good jam as much as anyone. Peace to everyone and I hope this fest lives up to my expectations (and I hope the logistical problems described elsewhere are exaggerated).

Also, Ace is a Bob Weir solo album, but the band backing him up is the rest of the Dead, so I guess it could go either way...

And baritoneboy, the entrance process was different for everyone. The people that had a more stressful experience are understandably the ones that are the most vocal. If I had endured what some did I would be as well. My experience was a lot better than some, maybe most, 4 hours in line and a minimal search. But here is the deal, even the people that waited forever will agree, once you got in it was all worth it. And that has to be the final measure.

On the topic at hand, I'm a huge Wilco fan and having them on the bill is a big plus for me. That's especially true this year as Lockn is the band's only scheduled appearance in 2014 (it's a hiatus year). They're not even holding their own festival.
I originally got into Wilco through their debut album. Straight ahead alt-country - great tunes. But where they've gone since has been nothing short of extraordinary. To me, they are one of the most adventurous American bands of the last two decades. The sonic exploration on LPs like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot & A Ghost Is Born may not be for everyone, but it's some really wild & deep music.
I also love how they've matured over the years and how the current lineup has really become a cohesive unit. Live is where this band shines. Tweedy is the leader, but it's a real band. And the addition of Nels Cline was genius.
I do wish Wilco was considered Top 40 in the U.S. That would mean we'd have a lot better, more challenging, music & radio industry on our hands. One that values artistry over conformity.

Let me say I'm impressed with the speed and level of activity on this forum. I only belong to a few and the ones I followed are pretty inactive. Two days can go by without anyone posting. This rapid response is refreshing and makes me feel less alone in my "musical obsession" or "musical tourism" as I like to put it. I own my own business and I take off for things like this. Life has been so cool since I started thinking that way.
This one is going to be great for me because of Wilco and The Allman Brothers. After having not seen them or Dickie Betts in almost a decade I went to an outdoor show last summer and realized what I was missing. Now those guys are leaving the band and it's ending and I get one last chance to feel that in person.
I like everything and the discovery of bands I've heard of but never listened to is the best part about these festivals. I was in a band and I mentioned to them I liked Wilco (maybe 3 years ago) and they made fun of me. Of course I missed most of their history and barely knew about Uncle Tupelo so to me they were a new discovery. They made the same type of comments as I saw in this forum and I just think it's parroting things people have heard. And then it becomes reality because somebody said it.
They have changed a lot since their first record. The last one had a lot of white noise and experimental shit and it really grew on me. Saw both nights at the Ryman and it was the two best nights of music I ever experienced in my life. As I "binge listened" to this band for a very short time, buying all the commercial releases and buying live downloads from their website, I saw the progression of an artist with a vision and it grew in my brain like Steely Dan did back in the 70s or the Beatles in the 60s. It may not be the best music I ever was into (I'm a huge Little Feat fan) but it's the best band still together and touring that I love. With the Allmans winding down they are the undisputed champion of my favorite live band still kicking. I don't expect everyone to share that opinion, my wife can't stand them. I'm just telling you that I'm a musician and a songwriter and I totally admire what this guy has done and is doing.

Garcia's first "solo" album is more or less a Dead album, too. Most songs have at least one or two members of the Dead sitting in and every song became a Dead standard except the experimental ones.

After listening to more wilco sets and a couple albums I still find them weak...and that's being kind. Their slots at Interlocken will give me time for a meal and a nap. Hope you enjoy the show.
