Y'all can tell me that I'm gonna like Phish and MMJ and fancy light shows all you want. It's like salmon for me. I don't like salmon. People tell me I've just never have good salmon. But I HAVE had good salmon. And it still tastes like salmon. And I don't like salmon. I also don't care for Phish, MMJ or overdone light shows.
Different stroke for different folks, you know.
If we truly looking to the history of the importance of the visuals at a live rock show we have to tip hats to the originators and pioneers, the Brotherhood of Light, who date back as far as the original acid tests and the SF ballroom gigs. It's all derivative which I know is not lost on Phish lighting guru Chris Kuroda as he blazes the trail using the technologies available to him. I for one hope CK5 has his full bag of tricks available to him during the Lockn Phish sets.
Peace to the group. First timer to Lockn and I couldn't be more excited about the lineup. I dig the passion, depth of knowledge and incredible wit on these message boards.

On one tour DSO "updated" their lights and it did not fit at all, and was a huge distraction. In my view, that is because they are recreating a historical piece, and a 1970's rock show was pretty much out of fixed lights with some sweeps, not spinners and all like now.
OTOH I really like the light/picture show that goes along with Dave Mathews. Maybe I focus on it b/c I knew the light guy, Fenton Williams, growing up and it's fun to see a local guy do well--but he really does an incredible show.
I can also understand how some bands, in it for show, want or even need lights or other effects as part of the act--it's all entertainment. Would Aerosmith or Alice Cooper be the same if they performed sitting in a circle of chairs dressed like a classical chamber quartet?

Maybe that is a nod we will be getting at least some components of Phish's light show.

Either way they are without a doubt the two best light setups going right now and being operated by the two best light guys in the business.
