Any wine drinkers?

My buddy is throwing a birthday party for a friend. We have a couple of houses at the beach. About 20 people total. This is the wine list as I know it. They have been collected over the last 10 years. There aren’t any whites but that will change. The Eloge is the heavy hitter.



1x 3L – NV Duval-Leroy Brut Champagne



1x 1.5L - 2009 Domaine Grand Veneur Vielles Vignes Chateauneuf-du-Pape



1x 1.5L - 2007 Tikal Locura Mendoza, Argentina



1x 1.5L - 2008 DuMOL Russian River Valley Pinot Noir



1x 1.5L - 2002 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon



1x 1.5L - 2005 Garric Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon



1x 1.5L - 2007 O'Shaugnessy Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon



1x 1.5L - 2008 Anderson’s Conn Valley Estate Reserve Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon



1x 3L - 2012 Caymus 40th Anniversary Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon



1x 1.5L - 2003 Two Hands Lily’s Garden McLaren Vale Shiraz



1x 3L - 2005 Mitolo G.A.M. McLaren Vale Shiraz



1x 1.5L - 2007 Blackbird Illustration Oak Knoll District Proprietary Red



1x 1.5L - 2005 Continuum Oakville Proprietary Red

good call; I was going to snatch that Caymus for myself.

Interesting that they have so many 1.5 bottles; we don't see the good stuff in them around here usually, just 750's.

First of all I know next to nothing about wine. I do have the good fortune to know someone who does. So I have been exposed to not a few very good wines that I would have never had otherwise. All of the wines listed are generally outside my experience and definitely outside my price range.

The magnums and jeroboams are usually limited but are available if you order them thru a wine merchant.

Of those listed I've had Chateauneuf-du-Pape but not sure (probably not) about the Veneur Vielles Vignes appelation and almost certainly not a 2009. The Silver Oak is a particular favorite of mine and a 2002 needs to be drunk now. Any Caymus is a good Caymus is a general rule to follow. I've had a Blackbird Illustration and a Continuum before but again probably not these years. I've had older more renowned ports than the 1988 Niepoort Colheita but it should be awesome.

The 2007 CA wines should be the top of the charts as that was an exceptional year. So the O'Shaugnessy Howell Mountain, Illustration and especially the Eloge should all shine. 2008 & 2005 were both very good years for the Napa Valley as well. 2002 was average to above average. 2012 is being touted as a "classic vintage for Napa Valley from start to finish" but the Caymus is young.

It's hard to find info on the overall comparative vintages for the McLaren Vale but both of the Shiraz have scores in the low 90's and Shiraz is what that area of Australia is known for. The real wild card is the Locura. It is a predominately Malbec blend and scored mid 90's where you can actually find it rated.

Sorry if this is boring. I am trying to educate myself so I'm not going to be the most ignorant person drinking these. Just second most ignorant is good enough.

My wine has to meet one requirement. It must be red.

I like good Chardonnays. In particular I like Sonoma-Cutrer Russian River Ranches. I like a dry crisp Pinot Grigio with light appetizers. There are really good Viogniers, Chenin Blancs, Sauvignon Blancs and Grüner Veltliners. All depends on the setting and the food being served.

Actually I would love to try some of those wines but for the most part we drink Yellowtail Shiraz and when we feel like splurging we go for the Mirrasou Merlot!

I am totally a $12-15 wine drinker. All of these are WAY out of my league. Going to be one of the most expensive highs around. Even compared to waking up in a strange hotel room in NOLA and realizing you checked in for three days, two of which you were going to be at home because your flight was leaving shortly.

Like riojas, as there are totally a ton of good wines available in that price range.

When I go up, I really enjoy the Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs.

I'm partial to riojas as well....and cabernet, syrah, malbec.... There are so many choices these days.
