Hiss Golden Messenger last night. Initially had a pretty big group planned, but a couple backed out which led to Mrs. Kuriti backing out, so we ended up with my Brother in Law, a neighborhood buddy (asked last minute) and Kip. I worked from 6a-3p yesterday and was zonked so I suggested we go early and sit in what my rememory told me was the balcony, which turned out to be a loft with a bar and no seating. My rememory ain't as good as I remember. So we drank beers on the upstairs porch until the 3rd song of the opener, William Tyler. I had heard of him before but most of what I listened to was solo acoustic. We could hear a drum and slide guitar so we went inside and pushed our way into the crowd. The crowd was generously spaced general admission and Kip linebacked his way to about the 8th row. Tyler indeed had a slide guitarist and a very good drummer. They put on a surprisingly good show.
At the end of the opener, we pushed up more as people moved around and ended up center front. WOW, what a show. He is so good live. Only recognized the bass player. Original drummer was the same as Bon Iver and the original keyboardist was from another local band that had modest success but whose name escapes me now. Neither were there. The band was tight as hell though and a pretty good setlist. He played a bunch off his new album and said they were first time live. He played Mahogany Dread which is the song that makes me think of Mrs. Kuriti and which I try to get her to listen to the lyrics every year or so but by the time it gets to the 3rd verse where the relevant lyrics are she loses interest and so it is "our song" but she doesn't really know why. Nonetheless, I was glad to hear it live for the first time. This is 4-5th time I have seen Hiss and they just get better, even with the shifting band. Three song encore and it was over. I had seen MC Taylor (lead singer) checking the keyboardist phone at one point and didn't see any setlists on the stage so I assumed there were none, but as we milled around afterward I saw some people getting one. I thought they were gone and was talking to the lady who got one, then more appeared and the guy handed the last one and said "yall can fight over this one". There was no fight, I took it. Really great night and only deepened my belief that the best live music is 5 feet from the stage anywhere for $25.
