Everything you said makes way too much sense so I’m guessing we have another few months of anticipation....

I would assume they’re waiting on Phil to decide what he’s gonna do. If Phil plays then they have to coordinate his “Friends”, if WSP & Mule are doing an October tour then “The Q” is out. Phil is alotta moving pieces & no guarantee he’ll show. If there’s “No Phil” then it’s a completely different show & they have to build the lineup from scratch. If this happens, I bet Lockn skews younger with headlining acts geared to to the 30-40 crowd more so so than the 55 & over crowd that’s the bread & butter for a Lockn. Personally, I think Phil passes, Bob Weir too. I think we’ll get JRAD w/ Mayer one night, TTB doing a “one off” & then somebody like UM, Twiddle, SCI or TAB the other night and Billy Strings/Marcus King for Thursday. I think Shapiro will wait as long as he can on Phil, but they haven’t even rebooked the Capitol B-Day shows yet, which were rescheduled dates from the Halloween Run he couldn’t fulfill, so I don’t think Phil leaves Terrapin til 2022, if ever. I expect a Skelton lineup announcement after Memorial Day, with the undercard getting filled in closer to the festival once all the undercard bands know what the fall is gonna look like. Every band is gonna try to cram two years worth of shows into 4 months. It’s gotta be busy.

I don't expect them to try to replicate last year's line-up, but they will start from scratch. Coordinating the bands this fall will be nuts. I also can't see them banking on Phil--too many problems and too little draw.
I think we can count on this: however they play it, from timing to line-up, when they announce and how much at a time, all of that will provoke the same reaction: What the hell are they doing this year?

They haven’t to my knowledge. If “Kings & Strings” could work then Mayer & Billy Strings could too. I don’t think Billy Strings could “sit in” with Dead & Co, he just plays too fast but I could totally see Billy Strings being a Late Night Pool Band or opener one night at “Playing In The Sand” and Mayer joining him. I haven’t seen Mayer play an acoustic much but I’m sure he can pick a flat top. Or if they were in a Phil & Friends lineup together like the one he had at Lockn with The StringDusters & Anders Osborne on lead, that would an event to see.

I agree that differences between festivals gets smaller each year. It just comes with there being fewer “Headline Level” acts out there these days & they get spread too thin not to overlap. You really only have maybe 5 bands that are Headliner material. With Phil & Friends being basically a thing of the past now, you’re only left with Phish (who’s too big for Lockn), String Cheese Incident, Tedeschi Trucks, Widespread Panic (who tour less & less each year), Umphrey’s & JRAD that can be considered true headliners. My Morning Jacket & The Avett’s fit that bill too but they’ve each only made the one appearance but may be the new “regulars” one day. Then you have the next tier of bands, Bisco, Pigeons, Gov’t Mule, Twiddle, Oteil & Friends, GSBG, RRE, Lettuce, Slightly Stoopid, Moe,TAB, Marcus King & Billy Strings. I’d throw your Wolf Brothers, Billy and The Kids, GoldenGate Wingmen into this group too, great bands that just aren’t big enough to Headline a night but make great Late Night bands or bands to play in between the Headliner’s two sets. When you only have around 15 bands to build out your lineup around, your gonna have alotta overlap. I think Lockn does a good job of having the “one off” sets the other festivals don’t get. It’s like Hulaween always has the Cheese Cover Set, you don’t get that anyplace else, and it sells tickets. As far as DSO, I’ve seen them from the John & Scott days 20 years ago, but I think they only got booked because Shapiro needed Barracco for “The Q”, and it was a package deal, you want Rob then you gotta book Rob’s band.

But I agree with your assessment of who we're more likely to see and to address Worf's point, he made it himself when he said "I don't know what that will, or even can, look like with the boys aging." A festival can't continue to hold on to the deep past especially as those from the deep past barely hold on themselves (generally; Bobby is like a spring chicken). I think younger acts like King/Strings will bring in the crowd the event needs to survive. Not the Doobies or Heart or Brickell or, sad to say, even Layla.

Personally what I think Shapiro should do is every year follow a formula...
Thursday: Good Bluegrass (Billy Strings, GSBG, etc)
. Southern Rock (Marcus King, Allman Betts, Gov’t Mule, etc)
Friday: Two Headliner Level Bands 3 Sets Total
. Band A gets 2 Sets (1 Reg, 1 Cover/Tribute Set)
. Band B gets 1 Set
. This should be a yearly rotation of SCI, TTB, WSP & UM
Saturday: Band B from Friday should get 1 Set this night
. The Allstar Grateful Dead Show 2 Sets
This should be a yearly rotation of all the heavy hitters coming together to make an All Star 6 Piece. Guys like Trey, Warren, Herring, John Bell, Trucks, Susan, Marco, Russo, Kang, Hollingsworth, Chimenti, Lane, Page, Fishman, Kimock, Mayer, Krasno, Oteil, Reed Mathis, Gordon, etc... just a jam every year.
Sunday: Good Bluegrass/Folk/Americana during the day
. A Headliner that’s not there usually, either a more mainstream act like MMJ, The Avett Brothers, etc. or a nostalgia type headliner to close it out like Springsteen, Pearl Jam, DMB or The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
As the acts we all love get retired, this is the pivot that I would like to see Lockn make.

Bonnaroo has a brand and I happen to know its "break even" point is a ridiculously low number of tickets--so it has a safety zone.
As for Lockn', with pent-up demand, if there ever was a year to avoid the "money suckers" and propped up oldsters, it's this one.
But they never listen to me.
