Welcome to the Lockn' Forum - The home of the original Lockn' Music Festival family!
OK seriously. Stop and think calmly with an open mind. It could be very good, and here's why: Most of the songs of the first four albums were by Boyce-Hart--in fact, I think one or both wrote from Charlottesville, just up the road. They were respected songwriters along the lines of Lieber-Stoller and (Carol) King-Goffigan. The reason the songs sold then, and people still like them now, says something that the roots of the songs are legit. They lend themselves to covers and new interpretations. While the basic studio band was pretty basic, adding more or better musicians just makes the songs better. Think of the many killer covers over the years, often quirky or a total shift in tone. Novelty songs? Who can name a top-flight band that played Quinn the Eskimo and was loved for it? Then there's Mike Nesmith--probably the true musician, and only true songwriter, in the group. He was out of place in the TV band because he was a real musician. When Seldom Scene took on "What am I doing Hanging 'round" it connected the dots that hippie bluegrass knew. He was in and out of McKuen, Loggins/Messina, NGDB, Byrds, Burritos and all that sound. And didn't Nesmith write "Last Train to Clarksville" which also goes to bluegrass really well, and also Giant Step--a Taj Mahal favorite? Regardless of the author, though, the Monkees' songs endure. Now, if the Monkees or some iteration tours, it will generally be "a cover band of themselves" as we often say, so I wouldn't want them to be stand-alone at Lockn. So this is about the only time you'll hear me endorse an Incident--let SCI give the Monkees the performance depth and let SCI stretch the songs beyond the 3:41 time slots, and you could have a really fun jam.
